The Mikhaylovsky Palace is often mistaken for the Mikhaylovsky Castle because of similar names. Visitors suppose them to be all the same. Still, though these buildings are located close to each other, they are completely different. The Mikhaylovsky Palace history starts in 1798. The Emperor Paul I decided to make a unique gift to his younger son, grand duke Mikhail Pavlovich, and right after his birth ordered to save annual sums of money to build a magnificent palace. Unfortunately, Paul I never saw the Mikhaylovsky Palace. He was assassinated during a coup. Nevertheless, his will was accomplished.
