Russian classicism is one of the brightest pages in the history of world architecture. It had different stages of development and reached great prosperity under the reign of Catherine II. The ‘clear and harmonious appearance’ anthemed by A. Pushkin was achieved with such masterpieces as the Marble Palace. This unique palace coated with multicolored marbles like a precious treasure has been the dominant in the Dvortsovaya embankment for more than two centuries and always strikes visitors with its greatness. The main architectural value of the palace is represented by its facades coated with natural stones. Now they have preserved its original appearance. 32 types of natural stones – different types of marble, granite and lazuli – were used for the facades and interior. Enormous boulders were shipped along the Neva river from quarries near Lakes Ladoga and Onega.
